Where the herbs come from...
Most herbs require 2-3 years before they reach the potency needed to be effective
medicinally, some require 5 years. I currently only have a handful of herbs that are old enough to harvest. Until my plants 'grow up', most of the herbs that I use are purchased from an organic herb farm here in Oregon, others are native to my area and are ethically wildharvested by me. All herbs are True Certified Organic through OTCO, (Oregon Tilth Certified Organic), Fair Trade Certified or ethically Wild Harvested.
Tinctures are the most convenient and potent way to take herbal remedies and supplements; they are also the most popular. They are concentrated, so you don't have to take as much or as often as capsules or teas. They are portable and they have a long shelf life. Alcohol tinctures keep their potency for approximately three years, glycerine and vinegar tinctures last about 18 months. For those of you who simply don't like the taste of alcohol, but desire the enhanced potency and longer shelf life of the alcohol tincture, you can drop your dosage into a cup of steaming tea or water and let sit for 5-10 minutes, most of the alcohol will evaporate out.
Herb capsules are a tasteless way to take herbal remedies. They are not absorbed into the bloodstream as quickly as teas and tinctures but are nonetheless an effective way to ingest herbs. I would recommend them more for the herbs that you take on a regular basis as opposed to taking them in reaction to a specific ailment. Nothing beats teas and tinctures for fast-acting relief.
Herbal teas are the most ancient form of taking herbal medicine. They tend to be more cost effective than other forms of herbal remedies. In addition, they are an especially gentle and soothing way of taking herbs. Drinking medicinal herbal teas can be a helpful way of cutting down on caffeine-containing drinks.
